Do we listen? Now, the answer may seem obvious; but let me challenge you to consider this question carefully. For the most part, we do something like listening. We hear the words, but not the intent and, if we were asked to mirror back what was said, we would be hard-pressed to do so. Why is advanced listening a critical leadership skill? The Harvard Business Review and many other publications are rife with examples of leaders who refused to listen…and the often disastrous events that resulted. Listen to my TEDx Talk video here by the same name. In it, I “tell on myself” with two examples of where is was not deeply listening and what happened when I finally heard the contributions that two very different men were attempting to make.
