small office productivity tip
Learn to Say "No" -- Then Say It!

Simply saying "No" can shave hours off the time you spend at work and away from family and friends. Friends, family, neighbors and business associates can, inadvertently, keep you from getting the work done in fulfillment of your goals.

Be ruthless and rigorous in evaluating the time you spend in idle conversations, in non-productive meetings and in organizations that, while you're working them to the fullest, aren't producing results. If it isn't working, you can, of course, keep doing what you're doing, but you can also do it differently or not at all.

My Networking Isn't Working...It's Just Work

Two sets of computers are set up to "talk" together, and no: this is not the start of a bad joke. One set, wired as master-slave works about as you'd imagine: the master computer has access to files, hardware and programs on the slave computer. The slave gets little if any benefit from its relationship to the master. Now take a look at another set of computers connected as peer-to-peer. They share resources -- files, programs and hardware --  and the sharing of those resources is mutually beneficial. Further each computer's owner decides how much or how little the other computer gets access to.

Business networking, unfortunately, looks a whole lot more like master-slave than peer-to-peer with one person vying to gain as much benefit from another person as possible without giving anything up. We've all seen them: the networking sharks. They stroll right up to you and try to sell you and when they can't, they drop you without so much as an insincere attempt at asking you what you do and who you are as a person.

You come home late, having eaten suspect chicken wings, with a handful of business cards and thinking, tiredly, of having to get up the next morning and do it all over again.

What's the Buzz about The 90 Day Challenge?

A comment from a past participant:

From Chris (professional coach): I took this class recently and my business has been growing ever since.  Lalita's combination of wisdom, experience and know-how, along with her warmth, vitality and extraordinary coaching skills makes her a dynamic trainer.

Not only has my business substantially grown but I've also learned how to leverage the many contacts that I've had but just didn't know how to use.  Her system is well thought and is taught in a way that breaks it down into manageable pieces and then - she holds us ACCOUNTABLE for doing what we say we'll do to improve our business!

Lalita's class has helped me get clearer and more focused on the market that I want to target and the type of clients I want to attract.  I have also learned how to network with others in and out of the class to form partnerships that are mutually beneficial and have an important impact on my bottom line.  I have even decided to get an office outside of my home to accommodate my influx of new clients.

A new 90 Day Challenge will begin on June 1st. Complimentary informational sessions are scheduled for May 4th and 18th at 3:30 pm (Chicago)/4:30 pm (New York).

Its Really a Good Thing --  Really...

Thanks to the fine people at Stamps.com with a little help from the U.S. Postal Service, you can now print out stamps personalized with your favorite photo or image.

The re-launch of this program came after a few glitches were worked out in a 7-week long test launch in which users created and used stamps they designed and printed out locally.

Unfortunately, the good people at Stamps.com (where the service originates) didn't count on the ingenuity of those intrepid testers, some of which created stamps with images of Ms. Monica's infamous blue dress, the Unibomber (who use the postal service to deliver his deadly homemade bombs), disgraced former governors, people executed for espionage and world leaders who were found guilty of ethnic cleansing. Note: They've closed this pesky little loophole with a really detailed set of Content Restrictions, which, hopefully, will keep stamps with Ted Bundy out of circulation.

Just create an image with a camera of graphics program, upload it to PhotoStamps.com, which can be accessed from the Stamps.com or USPS.gov (US Postal Service) websites, customize your stamp, print it and start using it.

Think about it: your company's logo or your picture on a personalized postage stamp on your mass mailings and après-networking note cards, a great picture from your dream vacation (perfect if you're a professional photographer), your daughter's engagement photo on all her wedding announcements. Nice.

Business Card Conundrum

Here's an ugly chore. You've come back from a meeting armed with a stack of newly-acquired business cards. Rather than letting them disappear into the back of your desk drawer, try this great product.

Corex offers two easy-to-use business card scanners. Both CardScan business card scanners will create a picture of each business card, turn the information on the card into data than can be transferred to other applications and put that contact into a contact management system.

The CardScan Professional version, in addition, will create full color copies of the business cards you scan, provide an online version of your database (great if you're away from your office and need a number in a hurry) and even email out requests for updated information to your contacts.

I tested this after attending an event. It took seconds per card to scan them in and then just a few seconds to verify the accuracy of the scan. Since I met all the people at the same event, CardScan even allowed me to create a note ("Met at xyz event on abc date) and then automatically placed that note on each card. Nice.
